ATV winch & recovery basics

How to choose an ATV winch, synthetic vs steel rope, mounting, and how to do a safe self-recovery with a tree saver and snatch block.

Updated Oct 25, 2026

Quick answer

Most mid- and large-bore ATVs run a 2,500 to 3,500-lb winch; many factory trail trims ship with 3,500-lb synthetic rope. Synthetic rope is lighter and stores less energy if it breaks. Always use a tree saver, keep people out of the line, and lay a damper over the rope.

Sizing a winch

A common rule of thumb is a rated line pull of at least about 1.5 times the loaded weight of the machine. A loaded big-bore ATV with gear can approach 1,300 to 1,500 lb, which is why 3,500-lb units are the norm on overland trims. For reference, WARN lists its VRX 35-S at 3,500 lb rated single-line pull, 50 ft of 3/16-in synthetic rope and 15.1 lb weight.

Check the model database: factory winches are listed for the CFMOTO CFORCE 1000 Overland (3,500 lb), Can-Am Outlander XT/XT-P trims, Polaris Sportsman Trail/Ultimate trims and others. Show models with a factory winch →

A safe self-recovery, step by step

  1. Stop, look, think. Can you back out, lower tire pressure, or move rocks instead?
  2. Pick a solid anchor straight ahead: a healthy tree (with a tree saver), a large rock, or another vehicle in park with brakes set.
  3. Free-spool enough rope and connect with a soft shackle or rated D-ring. Never wrap the rope back on itself.
  4. Leave at least five wraps on the drum (check your winch manual for its minimum).
  5. Lay a recovery damper or heavy jacket over the rope midway.
  6. Clear everyone out of the line and the sides. Operate the remote from the side, not in line.
  7. Winch in short pulls and let the motor cool. Ease the throttle only if your manual allows driving while winching.
  8. Use a snatch block to double pulling power or change direction.
Important: Winching can seriously injure people. Read your winch manual, inspect rope before every trip, and never step over a loaded line.
