Gun boots & bow mounts: transport only
How to carry a cased rifle, shotgun or bow on an ATV for hunting trips, where to mount it, and why you must check your state's transport laws first.
Quick answer
Use a padded, hard-sided boot or bow case mounted securely to the rack or a dedicated bracket, keep it clear of the exhaust, and follow your state's rules on how firearms and bows may be transported on an OHV. Rules differ by state, by land manager and by season, so read the current regulations before every trip.

Mounting basics (equipment only)
- Hard or padded boots mount to the front or rear rack with dedicated brackets; keep weight within the rack rating.
- Bow cases and bow racks should hold the bow by the riser and protect the cams and string from vibration and brush.
- Keep cases clear of the exhaust, handlebar sweep and your legs. Make sure the case cannot rotate on its mount.
- Use a lockable case or cable lock if you leave the ATV at camp.
- Dust is the enemy: choose cases with good seals for desert riding.
Check the law before you ride
Transport rules for firearms and archery equipment on OHVs are set by state law, state wildlife agencies and land managers, and they change. Some states regulate whether a firearm may be loaded or uncased on a vehicle; national parks and other federal lands have their own rules. We do not summarize those rules here. Read the current regulations for your state and hunt unit:
- Utah: the current Utah Division of Wildlife Resources hunting guidebooks and Utah Code.
- Other states: your state wildlife agency's hunting regulations and the land manager (BLM, USFS, state lands) for the area you ride.
